  • Anita Beaman
Director, Post Baccalaureate Program in School Librarianship
    Milner Library, Illinois State University
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
As the Director of the School Library Program at Illinois State University, I feel I can represent a variety of viewpoints to the RAILS Board. I only recently began my position as program director after ten years as a practicing high school librarian. My departure from school library work is very recent, and my continual contact with the school librarians and aspiring school librarians I teach results in an inside understanding of the concerns and needs of school libraries. My new position as Director has also opened up new insights. I teach in our program as well as administer it, providing me with insight into librarian education and experience with recruiting and advising new librarians, creating professional development, marketing, budgeting and all the other myriad responsibilities that accompany such a position. I also have a unique opportunity to serve as a liaison between school libraries, academic libraries, and the university. Finally, as an employee of Milner Library, I'm gaining and understanding of academic librarianship and the issues and concerns facing academic libraries like Milner.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
Member, Alliance Library System Advisory Council. 2006 - 2010 Member, Alliance Library System New Member Committee. 2005-2006 Member, American Association of School Librarians. Knowledge Quest Editorial Board. Fall 2005 2010 As a library educator, I feel I have a unique insight into the needs and concerns of new librarians as well as the veteran librarians who are taking our courses. My work to help our students find school library jobs also provides information on the role school librarians are expected to take in Illinois school districts and how well our school librarians are filling those roles.
  • Jill Sodt
    LRC Coordinator/Librarian
    Black Hawk College, East Campus
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I was a member of the Future of Library Systems subcommittee and offered valuable contributions as such. This would continue if I were selected as a Director for the new library system. I would also bring my knowledge and expertise related to academic libraries, both as a current community college librarian and with past experience in university libraries. Beyond my professional experience, I am a library user. I strongly believe in the value of all libraries, no matter the type, and would welcome the opportunity to serve libraries, library staff, and library users within the state of Illinois.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:

While living in Kansas, I was the vice-president for the academic section of the Kansas Library Association. In my professional capacity, I am the Learning Resources Center Coordinator and sole librarian at Black Hawk College, East Campus. As such, I direct the daily operations of the library, media services, and our Independent Learning Center. This involves being responsible for budgets, supervision of staff, collection development, library instruction, and other relevant duties.
  • Phyllis C. Self
    Dean of Libraries
    WIU Libraries
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
The unique experiences that I bring to the newly merged system and its mission are that I have worked in public libraries, school libraries, university libraries and special libraries in Illinois, Ohio and Virginia as well as taught in the School of Information and Library Science at UNC-Chapel Hill. These experiences allow me to look at issues from various points of view. Living and working in Macomb I now have experience and insight into the major barriers facing populations living and working in rural areas and what a public library means in the rural area. The library is the center of rural communities. Most of my previous experiences were in large urban population areas. I have been and continue to be a strong supporter of multitype libraries and know the value of collaborations across all types of libraries regardless to their location. I love libraries and what they offer communities!
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:

  • Donna Dziedzic
    Executive Director
    Naperville Public Library
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
We are fortunate that our merged systems have a strong history of service. It is essential that we move the newly merged system forward to a strong and transformative future. There is much compliance work remaining to be done along with a great deal of corporate culture development as well as strategy and service evolution. I have had the opportunity to serve on numerous community and library associated boards and have been associated with the merger transition. I have also worked in public, state, academic and special libraries as well as in the private sector, bringing a broad perspective both of our profession and our service communities. For many years, I have fostered a beneficial cost to service ratio - even more important in this time of financial constraint. It is time to move forward, I believe I can help build strength and stability into our new system.

If elected, I will devote myself to helping develop RAILS into a vibrant system that provides the services and resources necessary to its members. My actions will be firmly based on what is best for Illinois libraries, and I will always strive to ensure that active two-way communication between the system and its members is the top priority for the Board.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
As the Director of the Joliet Public Library, I have led a large urban/suburban library that is a part of a predominately rural system and the largest member of our LLSAP. Throughout my career, I have shown myself capable of productively and proactively working with elected officials, the business community, and community organizations to further the mission of libraries and build the relationships necessary to ensure their continued success and growth. I have also been an active member of the Missouri Library Association, ILA, and ALA - having presented at conferences and served on several committees. I've faithfully followed the merger process through attendance in-person or from a remote site; therefore, I feel I have the historical perspective needed to make as seamless a transition as possible to this new venture. I bring strengths in innovative problem-solving, respect for collaborative work, strong skills in listening and verbal and written communication, and a commitment to the values of resource sharing in a multi-library environment. • Deirdre Brennan
    Executive Director
    Oak Park Public Library
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I will focus on what's best for all library users as they are our customers and funders; I will also focus on what's best for the good of the system as a whole; I will encourage best practice in the services that RAILS will deliver and how they deliver them to members; I will want RAILS to be a leader among library systems in the US; I will be an active, engaged Board Members.

I have worked in several different library systems in two states, Massachusetts and Illinois. I was part of the steering committee that led the creation of multi-type systems in Massachusetts in the 1990's - a difficult and contention change from public library systems so I have experience in building consensus and finding areas of mutual agreement among different constituencies. I was also a system administrator in Massachusetts, so I have seen system work from both vantage points. I have been the co chair of the Future of Illinois Library Cooperation, a project of ILA and the State Library, that is focused on creating new cooperative relationships and services among Illinois libraries.
  • Edward Moy
    Curriculum Developer
    Schaumburg Township District library
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I would like to see the system be able to support Life Long Learning in libraries throughout the system. I would also like to make sure that what happened to cause this merger does not happen again. Libraries and their support systems are too valuable to lose due to financial mismanagement / politics by the state.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
I have been the church council chairman for my church for the past 2 years and a council member for a year before that. I also lead a missions team to Arizona every year for the last 8 years.

It would be my privilege to offer the full extent of my education and experience as an Illinois librarian for the past thirty-five years to the RAILS library system. My professional goal has always been to serve at the system level and this opportunity to join with the newly formed board would engage my past experience with Illinois library systems in the regional, academic, corporate, school, and public library communities. I am dedicated to providing the best library services to the broadest community of Illinois residents, in this case, within the RAILS boundaries; and in cooperation with the Illinois Heartland Library System, the Illinois State Library, and the Illinois Library Association.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:

  • Gwen Gregory

I am a strong supporter of multitype library cooperation. I believe that all types of libraries must work together to serve our clients. Partnerships between libraries are a vital part of our world and our services. Together we are more than just the sum of the parts. The regional system should be a leader in this process, as well as in training and innovation. The system can bring libraries together. I served on the Academic Advisory committee of the Metropolitan Library System, which was doing great things before its demise.

How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
My professional experience is in a library in corporate setting, a very results-oriented, facts-and-data driven, and innovation-seeking type of organization. The mission of the merged systems is one to which I can contribute, especially as regards promoting the values of innovation, responsible stewardship, and partnership.

  • Jennifer Owens

How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I am honored to be a librarian during this critical time. Libraries are an essential pillar of every community providing personal enrichment and lifelong learning. I feel positive that we can take a close look at our mission and creatively focus our efforts successfully through innovation and technology to make sure we have the very best cooperative network possible. I will do my best to build upon already successful efforts and ideas. I will listen carefully, recruit and promote new insights into the sharing of resources, advocate to stakeholders and political representatives, and make sure everyone s voice is heard. I will bring my years of experience, enthusiasm and sense of humor to every meeting. My inspiration? Everyone I meet that strives to do a little better each and every day. As the song goes: take your passion and make it happen. My passion is libraries and I plan to do just that. Period.

  • Julie McNamara
    District Librarian
    Fieldcrest CUSD #6
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I am seeking election to the RAILS board to represent small school libraries. As the library system becomes larger, it is even more essential that small libraries have a voice on the board. I am passionate about my libraries and the services libraries all across the state are offering citizens. We need to express our concerns and help lawmakers understand that libraries are the frontline of education and technology in schools and communities. As a RAILS board member, I will be an advocate for library funding to insure that this vital resource for the people of Illinois continues. I will also work to elevate the profile of libraries as vital centers within communities. I want to ensure that the system is able to provide these necessary services as the budget issues in Illinois continue. I believe it is extremely beneficial for librarians to network and support each other. In many cases, we may be the only librarian in the school or district, so it is imperative to know that others share the same issues and concerns. When we work together, we can share ideas and creatively address these issues. I am currently a member of IV-ILearn, which is a group of school and academic librarians and a board member for Alliance Library System. These positions have helped me develop a network of librarians who provide assistance when I need it. I believe this network will also assist me in my duties and responsibilities as a RAILS board member.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
Alliance Library System board member, IV-ILearn participation member, I oversee the operation of 4 school libraries.
  • Karen Stott Bersche
    Library Director
    Towanda District Library
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
My current position as Director of Towanda District Library allows me to contribute the perspective of a member librarian who deals with the public daily. Having been a member of the management team of Alliance Library System, I bring a knowledge of the inside workings of library systems. As a former president and current member of the Association for Women in Communication, I possess communications skills to actively listen to member librarians, our technology partners, and the major funder of library systems - state government. I am willing and able to spend time transmitting information between these entities and from the system to the members at each type of library. With twelve years of experience as a consensus builder on the State Board of Rural Partners, I will make every effort to understand and to explain the various points of view of each library stake holder. I know there are many models for resource sharing and delivery. I look forward to working with the other members of the RAILS Board to discover the optimum ones for Illinois. Blending the best-of-the-best from each library system will keep Illinois at the forefront of library development in the U.S. My counseling degree and experience allow me to bring skills that encourage open dialog and to employ practices that actively engage stakeholders in shaping both local and system library services. Having served as the Director of Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center, I have past experience communicating across five Illinois library systems and I will bring an accessibility perspective to the RAILS Board. As a problem solver, named by Library Journal as one of the people most influencing library development in America, I know that I can imagine a brighter future for Illinois libraries if we maximize our creativity and innovation, and do so with integrity and respect for each other. Further, I pledge to be a voice for supporting interlibrary cooperation and resource sharing. Illinois libraries MUST cooperate to remain relevant. My main contribution to the RAILS Board will be to keep a focus on whole-hearted cooperation across Illinois.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
I was a Public Library Director in both PALS (in Savanna 1983 -1995) and ALS (in Towanda 2008 - present) so I've learned to adapt to the diverse culture of various systems while working at the front-line level. As Director of Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center, I worked with librarians in the five library systems of the MITBC service region, so I know many rural and urban librarians from my first-hand experience of actually visiting their libraries and listening to their stories. During my 15-year career at Alliance Library System, I was a management team member, Youth Services consultant, newsletter editor, web supervisor, as well as communications/partnerships director so I understand the workings of a library system - from the inside out - so to speak. I serve on the Executive Committee of the State Board of Rural Partners, a public/private partnership of state and federal agencies and private sector corporations, now in my fourth 3-year term. This board consists of people from across the State. I have experience lobbying on behalf of libraries in both D.C. and Springfield. I am past president of the Bloomington-Normal chapter of the Association of Women in Communication and winner of their Crystal Award for crystal clear communication, along with other marketing awards. I have experience talking to reporters to explain library issues in a manner that matters to the public. I am a proven communicator and plan to actively communicate relevant system information to member librarians. I am a member of the Illinois Library Association Marketing Committee and served on the 2010 Conference Planning Team. In addition to my degree in library science, I have a Master's in counseling which gives me unique insights into consensus/relationship building. Named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker in 2005, I believe I have the broad vision required to favorably influence the development of library service in Illinois. If my imagination could conceive of PIGS, The Great Librarian Recruiting Adventure, The Veteran's History Project video, and The Libraries Matter Campaign, I believe I can help to envision a new and promising future for Illinois library systems. I'm willing to represent you and listen to your needs!
  • Lorna Riggle
    Information Specialist
    Thermo Fisher Scientific, Information Center
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I will contribute to the mission of promoting excellence in library operations by carefully weighing all board decisions from the perspective of both the libraries and patrons affected. Although the times are financially trying for libraries, they are doubly so for our patrons, regardless of which type of library they are accessing. It is vitally important that we remain steadfast in providing patrons access to resources like continuing education materials, resume help, technology courses, and informational and leisure reading materials. Even in the Special Library environment, I access the PALS, I-Share, and WorldCat catalogs on a daily basis to get our internal customers the resources they need to make their jobs and personal lives easier. Issues of access to electronic database subscriptions are also an area where all types of libraries can find common ground. I will faithfully attend all RAILS Board meetings and remain informed of the issues affecting Illinois libraries. I am a staunch supporter of patron access to information, and I will consistently make decisions that reflect this.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
I have worked in Thermo Fisher Scientific's Information Center since March 2010, conducting research in business, medical, scientific, technical, and patent literature to respond to a wide variety of customer needs. I have previously worked in front-line customer service positions in academic and public libraries as well. With this unique perspective, I will be able to address the issues RAILS faces in a more holistic way. I am a member of the Special Libraries Association and a current volunteer at the Cherry Valley Public Library. Over the past five years, I have held positions in Circulation and Adult Services at the Batavia Public Library, and in Circulation and ILL as a student worker at Loyola University Chicago. I hold my MLIS from Dominican University in River Forest, IL.
  • Penny Sympson
    corporate librarian
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. (special library)
How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
I bring knowledge from special libraries (9 years experience), public libraries (3 years) and systems (3 years). I served on a Merger Design Team subcommittee and am very aware of the needs of rural and small libraries. Special libraries will receive a lower level of service (or no service at all) given the new system's near term focus on delivery, the Local Library System Automation Program (LLSAP) and Talking Books. I will keep in close contact with peers and when funding allows reinstated services to Illinois special libraries, I will be ready to lend a strong voice and provide creative ideas.
Please note any activities or areas of expertise that would be good background experience and of value to the RAILS Board:
Having worked in multiple library types, I bring a unique perspective when analyzing and discussing situations and services. My work ethic, expertise and advocacy saved my special library from being outsourced. My library is the highest rated administrative unit in my company as the result of my focus, drive and commitment. I volunteered to serve on the Staffing, Operations and Facilities subcommittee of the Merger Design Team. I also volunteered to serve as secretary of the subcommittee.

Since recently joining the DLS board, I have had a greater appreciation for advocacy on a state and national level. I have also had a greater realization of the need for partnering with other libraries and systems to ensure strength, viability, resources, services and access to current information and technology for all. I would be pleased and honored to be a part of this challenging and exciting new network of libraries to maintain and improve the access of all of our citizens to the many and varied services and information that our libraries provide.

I have a strong background in community service both public and not for profit. I have served on at least two other founding boards of directors which were establishing new organizations. I am quite familiar with the process, the responsibilities and the very real expectation of extra time required. I take my role of a board member very seriously and make every effort to actively participate and attend meetings punctually. I believe my professional experience as a CPA gives me a good sense of budget oversight, cashflow shedules and fiduciary responsibility. In addition, my experience as a business consultant gives me familiarity with the laws, deadlines and forms required of an employer and administrator. I am also team player and fully appreciate the benefit of working with attorneys, HR consultants and other recognized authorities to make sure that all systems within an organization run effectively.

How will you contribute to the newly merged system and its mission?
The mission of RAILS is to promote excellence in library operations by providing critical and cost effective supportive services. The two most critical supportive services for libraries are delivery and shared catalogs. The physical delivery of materials among libraries must be done in a manner that works best for each geographic area within RAILS. Delivery must be cost-effective, timely, efficient, and acceptable to our members. In some areas, Delivery may continue to be performed in-house, and in other areas, Delivery may be outsourced. I do not feel constrained to follow past practices which are no longer cost effective. With respect to shared catalogs, I believe the current systems must be integrated to make searching and sharing better for patrons. How will I contribute to the newly merged system and its mission? I will keep an open mind willing to accept new ideas that are supported by empirical evidence.
